Denmark granted Greenland home rule.  1

The Danish government declared a 200-mile economic zone off the east coast of Greenland.  2
 
1982–93
 
Conservative Party in power. Poul Schlüter took office as premier and formed a four-party coalition government on Sept. 10, 1982. He became Denmark's first Conservative Party prime minister since 1901. His severe austerity measures in the following years brought about a subsequent economic recovery.  3
 
1983
 
Denmark led the Common Market countries in the number of married women working outside the home; by 1983, 80 percent of married Danish women were employed. The Danes also led EC nations with its number of illegitimate births (40.6 percent of all births in 1983).  4
 
1985, March 24–31
 
A major private-sector strike broke out over a collective wage agreement. The Folketing approved a series of emergency measures requiring a return to work and imposing wage increases of 2 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively, in each of the next two years.  5

The Folketing approved restrictive immigration legislation limiting the admission of refugees and those seeking political asylum.  6
 
1989, May 26
 
Matrimonial law: marriage laws were revised so that all civil rights of married couples were extended to both heterosexuals and homosexuals who had previously lodged an official registration of their relationship.  7
 
Oct. 1
 
Eleven male couples were married in the first wedding ceremonies governed by Denmark's Registered Partnership Law.  8
