President Pieck announced that East Germany would be forced to rearm if West Germany became integrated with Western Europe. On May 7 the government announced plans to form an army to defend the Soviet zone “against aggression.”  1
 
May 26–June 5
 
Increased pressure on West Berlin coincided with the signing of the Bonn agreement, as the East German government ordered new restrictions on communications between East and West Germany.  2
