The lower house of Parliament approved legislation, effective July 1, giving police increased powers to arrest foreigners who were unable to identify themselves, the power to imprison them for up to three months, and sweeping powers to search homes.  1
 
1998, Aug. 12
 
The two largest Swiss banks, Credit Suisse Group and UBS AG, reluctantly agreed to pay $1.25 billion in reparations to victims of the Nazi Holocaust and other tragedies wherein stolen or “lost” assets had been unrecoverable since World War II.  2

Ruth Dreifuss, leader of the Social Democratic Party, became Switzerland's first female president as well as its first Jewish president. She took office on Jan. 1, 1999, and replaced Pres. Flavio Cotti.  3
