In municipal elections, D'Alema's Democratic Party of the Left lost numerous posts nationwide. As a result, Prime Minister D'Alema resigned on April 19 and was replaced by former Socialist Party member Giuliano Amato and his new Center-Left coalition.  1

As internal strife rocked the ruling Center-Left coalition, Premier Giuliano Amato stepped down from his position. He was replaced by the mayor of Rome, Francesco Rutelli, who vowed to run again in the April 2001 elections. This established Italy's 58th government since World War II.  2
