| The Fiat company angered unions with the announcement of 23,000 layoffs. A protest strike, in which 40,000 Fiat automobile workers marched through Turin defying union leaders and demanding a return to work, ended in failure. This signaled a change in the country; for the first time since the demonstrations of 1968, management began to reassert its control. | 2 |
