The government formally protested to Austria over terroristic acts by persons demanding autonomy for the German-speaking populace of Alto Adige province (formerly Austrian South Tyrol).  1

Premier Fanfani and his cabinet resigned to prepare for a Center-Left government with outside support from Pietro Nenni's left-wing Socialists. This ushered in a period in Italian politics known as the apertura alla sinistra, or opening to the Left, during which time Christian Democrats turned to the Left in forming their governments.  2
 
Feb. 21
 
Fanfani government was formed, composed of Christian Democrats, Democratic Socialists and Republicans, with left-wing Socialist parliamentary support.  3
