In a sign of increased secularization, a couple married in only a civil wedding unexpectedly won a slander suit against the bishop of Prato after he had denounced them as “public concubines.” The outcome spurred Cardinal Lercaro of Bologna to order his cathedral to be dressed in mourning for a month, and church bells tolled throughout the land.  1
