The government announced a ten-year economic plan, designed to wipe out Italy's large-scale unemployment. Some progress was made during 1950 with plans for much-needed agricultural reform, especially in the south, where the Christian Democrats created the Cassa del Mezzogiorno (Bank of the South) to finance development.  1

Italy assumed trusteeship under the United Nations over Somaliland, although it remained barred from UN membership by veto of the Soviet Union.  2
