Inauguration of the European Monetary System (EMS). All EC members except Britain began implementing the EMS exchange mechanism, a joint floating of eight of the nine EC currencies.  1

Universal suffrage was used for the first time in European parliamentary elections. The European Parliament was first directly elected by citizens of the member states (July 17).  2
