Beginning of French defection from NATO precipitated by President De Gaulle's refusal to put one-third of France's naval forces in the Mediterranean under NATO command. Disagreement between the United States and France on the stockpiling of nuclear weapons. The U.S. decided to transfer 200 airplanes from French to British and West German bases.  3
