At a conference of NATO foreign ministers in Paris, West Germany was formally admitted to membership in NATO.  1

The WARSAW PACT, signed by eight European Communist governments, was the reply to the integration of West Germany with NATO. Marshal Ivan S. Koniev became chief of the joint military command. A political consultative committee was to serve as the directing organ.  2
