Soviet-British ultimatum to the Iranian government, demanding the expulsion of all Germans. The shah, whose ties with Germany had been growing closer since the late 1930s, refused to comply. Iran remained neutral.  1

BRITISH AND SOVIET INVASION OF IRAN. Tehran was occupied on Sept. 16, and the country remained under Allied occupation until 1946 (See 1942, Jan 29).  2

Anglo-Russian ultimatum to Afghanistan, similar to the one issued earlier to the Iranian government, to expel all Axis nationals. The Afghan government grudgingly complied (Oct. 19), but insisted on preserving its neutrality throughout World War II.  3
 
Dec. 10
 
Second British drive into Libya. After relieving Tobruk, Imperial troops reached Benghazi for the second time (Dec. 25), but stopped short of El Argheila (Jan. 18, 1942). Rommel's reserves in Africa had been depleted because of the opening of the German drive on Russia (See 1941, June 22).  4
