J. B. Hertzog became the leader of the Nationalist Party, composed of Afrikaners, defined as those who placed South Africa's interests first. Imperial and mining interests were represented by the ruling South African Party under Botha. Strike by white miners in Natal and on Rand was put down by the army, drawing Nationalist and (white) Labor parties closer. | 1 |
