The Belgian Congo remained loyal to the Belgian government in exile and to World War II Allies under the forceful leadership of Pierre Rykmans. Demands for increased production for the war effort increased the corvée labor requirement from 60 to 120 days and more, in addition to forced rubber tapping. These stresses led to a series of urban and rural disturbances.  1
