Haile Salassie fled to Djibouti, and then to Britain; the Italians occupied Addis Ababa four days later.  1
 
1936–41
 
The Italians expanded their control over Ethiopia and the Horn. Italy emphasized the importance of ethnic-linguistic regions to dislodge loyalty to the imperial center. The education of children was redirected from academics to trades and crafts. Italians numbering 200,000 immigrated to work mostly in towns and in road construction.  2
 
1937–39
 
Sporadic resistance became a general but uncoordinated revolt.  3
 
1938, April
 
Britain recognized the Italian annexation of Ethiopia.  4
 
1940
 
The revolt reached a stalemate, but Britain and France joined the war against Italy, thus becoming allied with the Ethiopian resistance.  5
 
1941, Jan
 
The Allies invaded Ethiopia to dislodge the Italians.  6
 
May 5
 
Haile Selassie returned to Addis Ababa.  7
 
Nov
