1940s
 
The Second World War further stimulated nationalist sentiments that had already begun to develop by 1939. Wartime inflation and restrictions exacerbated African grievances. Africans largely supported the British war effort, but expected major concessions in return, especially the application of the Atlantic Charter to West Africa. The rise of African trade unions during the war considerably increased agitation for change. The DECOLONIZATION MOVEMENT began to build up momentum immediately following the end of the war in 1945.  1
