The New Persian (Sassanian) Empire was founded by Ardashir, a Persian who overthrew the Parthian Arsacid, Artabanus V. In 230, Ardashir attacked the Roman provinces of Mesopotamia and Syria. He was repulsed by Alexander in 232. On Alexander's death in 235, Ardashir invaded Mesopotamia.  1

Alexander was forced to buy peace from the Alamanni on the Rhine. His disgruntled troops murdered him (235, March), ending the Severan dynasty.  2
