Start of the war between the Italians and the Sanusiyya. The Italian governor of Cyrenaica declared all agreements with the Sanusiyya to be void.  1
 
1927, March 9
 
Termination of the local administrations in Cyrenaica and Tripolitania. The Italians permanently abandoned the principle of self-government for the Libyans.  2
 
1928, June
 
A decree made all public lands suitable for agriculture available only to Italian settlers.  3
 
1929, Jan. 24
 
Union of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica under one colonial administration.  4
 
1931, Sept. 11
 
Capture and execution (Sept. 16) by Italian authorities of al-Sayyid Umar al-Mukhtar, local leader of the Sanusiyya resistance. This event marked the end of the eight-year Sanusiyya insurrection in the Libyan interior.  5
 
1940, June
 
Al-Sayyid Idris agreed to organize a Sanusi force to fight with the British in Cyrenaica.  6
 
1942, Jan 8
 
The British promised that Libya would not be returned to Italian rule after the war.  7
 
1943, Feb
 
Completion of the British occupation of Cyrenaica and Tripolitania, where separate administrations were set up. The French had already established themselves in Fezzan. (See Libya)  8
