Resignation of Emile Eddé as president. French authorities appointed Alfred Naccache (Naqqash), a Maronite, to replace him.  2

Free French and British forces invaded Lebanon and toppled the Vichy administration. Gen. Georges Catroux afterward took office as the Free French high commissioner.  3

The Free French administration formally proclaimed Lebanese independence. The French nonetheless kept working to hold on to the reality, if not the legality, of their supremacy within the country.  4
