Gen. Maurice Sarrail served as French high commissioner. He was popular with leftist politicians in France, but his anticlerical attitudes antagonized the Christian population throughout Syria.  1

Organization of the People's Party. The leadership was composed mainly of nationalists who had been active in Faysal's Arab government before the arrival of the French. Taking advantage of a laxer political climate under Sarrail, the party openly demanded the unification of Greater Syria and its ultimate independence. It was also outspoken in denouncing Zionist settlement in Palestine.  2
