The government of Tawfiq Nessim revoked the constitution of 1930, but under pressure from the British did not reinstate the original constitution of 1923.  1
 
1935
 
Founding of the National Theatre, under the direction of prominent authors including Taha Husayn and Khalil Mutran. By this time, Egypt had assumed leadership of Arabic drama.  2
Death of RASHID RIDA (b.1865), probably the most renowned disciple of the great Muslim thinker Muhammad Abduh. Like Abduh, Rida believed in the compatibility of Islam and modern civilization. He is best known as the leading proponent of the Salafiyya, a movement to purify Islam. He advocated a pan-Islamic political ideology to help unify Muslims around the world and fend off European domination. Rida's later thought became more stringent as he drifted toward a strict orthodoxy that criticized such practices as Sufi ritual.  3
