National tariff autonomy. The government immediately set high duties on a large number of imports to encourage indigenous industry.  1

Appointment of Isma‘il Sidqi as prime minister. The move was an attempt by the king to circumvent parliamentary authority and rule through his followers. The Wafd announced its opposition to the new government and organized protests around the country.  2
 
Oct. 22
 
Imposition of a new constitution by the Sidqi government in collusion with the palace. The system of parliamentary elections, already indirect, was made even more so, to the disadvantage of the popular Wafd. The announcement of the constitution was followed by popular protests throughout Egypt.  3
