1931

The state took over responsibility for paying the salaries of all religious functionaries. The decision made all religious positions in effect government jobs subject to government supervision. The change further reduced the independence of the religious establishment.	1

1932, Jan. 22

First public recitation of the Qur'an in Turkish despite the opposition of conservative Muslims. The following year, a government decree required the Muslim call to prayer to be chanted in Turkish instead of Arabic.	2
