The military garrison at Tacubaya rebelled against the Madero presidency, attacking the National Palace. The first counterrevolutionary attack failed, but the rebels retreated to the Citadel, and began a ten-day artillery battle—the Decena Trágica—in Mexico City, during which most of the victims were civilians.  1
 
Feb. 18
 
With the support of U.S. ambassador H. L. Wilson, VICTORIANO HUERTA (1854–1916), Madero's military commander, ARRESTED AND MURDERED THE PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT. Huerta then assumed leadership of the government.  2
