Simultaneous uprisings, organized by Farabundo Martí and his followers, were set to begin throughout the countryside. Martínez, however, was informed of the plan, and suppressed the rebellion easily. In the aftermath, in a series of actions known as LA MATANZA (The Massacre), perhaps as many as 30,000 people were hunted down and killed by government forces on the pretext of their Communist or otherwise subversive tendencies. These actions set the tone for the Martínez dictatorship.  1
