TREATY OF LAUSANNE (See 1923, July 24). Exchange of populations: in the period until 1930 some 1,250,000 Greeks repatriated, with the help of the League of Nations and of the Near East Relief Commission; great financial and other problems were connected with this huge transfer, but Greece was enriched by the influx of artisans and farmers.  1
The Greek population rose from 2.6 million in 1907 to 6.2 million by 1928. Moreover, the population exchange eased tensions between Turkey and Greece and made Greece a more homogeneous nation, as refugees resettled in territories with previously few ethnic Greeks. In rural areas, the influx of settlers hastened the pace of land reform begun in 1917; large landed estates like those owned by the monasteries of Mount Athos were expropriated and broken up.  2
