Almost immediately, however, a Bolshevik army invaded the country and took Riga (Jan. 4). A Soviet government was set up, but German-Latvian forces, with the approval of the Allies, drove the Soviet troops back (March).  1

The Treaty of Versailles (See 1919, Jan. 18) required the Germans to withdraw from the Baltic states. Gen. von der Goltz was recalled (Aug. 16) at Allied insistence, but fighting between Germans and Latvians continued (German attack on Riga, Oct. 8) until about Nov. 20, when the country was finally cleared of German forces.  2
