Stauning organized another government after Socialist successes at the polls. His party acted in coalition with the Radical Left.  1
 
1931, July
 
A serious dispute with Norway developed over the problem of sovereignty over East Greenland.  2
 
1932–33
 
Unemployment reached 42.8 percent. Farmers were also increasingly unable to make loan payments. Economic problems led to an agreement between the Socialists and the leaders of the Vestre Party (Agrarian) that promised a 10 percent devaluation, the government purchase of surplus cattle, lower taxes on farm property, a one-year ban on strikes and lockouts, a large program of public works, and various social reforms.  3
 
1933
 
Agitation of the Germans in North Schleswig followed on the victory of the National Socialists in Germany. National socialism itself made but little progress in Denmark, although Denmark, practically disarmed, remained more or less at the mercy of its powerful neighbor.  4
 
1939
 
Denmark signed a nonaggression pact with Germany.  5
 
1940, April 9
 
GERMAN FORCES OCCUPIED DENMARK (See April 9). Stauning remained head of the government and Christian X remained in Copenhagen.  6
 
1941, April 9
 
The people of Greenland, while affirming their loyalty to Christian X of Denmark, accepted the protection offered by the United States.  7
 
1943, Aug. 29
 
After increasing acts of sabotage, Denmark was placed under a state of emergency. The Danish army was disarmed, and the government was replaced by an administration of civil servants who exercised legislative powers when necessary to avoid direct German rule.  8
 
Sept
 
Resistance was coordinated by the Freedom Council, which aided in the smuggling of almost all of Denmark's 7,000 Jews to Sweden.  9
