The Easter Crisis. When the government refused the king's call for new elections, on the grounds that no election should occur before electoral reform, it was dismissed, causing popular demonstrations. The Social Democrats and the unions called for a general strike. The king was forced to yield and appoint a caretaker ministry acceptable to all parties. This ministry would propose electoral reforms that would take effect before the new elections. | 2 |
