The Hungarian Parliament was adjourned indefinitely.  1
 
1944, March 19
 
The German army occupied Hungary and began the systematic extermination of its last Jewish enclave. Approximately 75 percent of Hungary's Jewish population was killed during the war.  2
 
Oct. 15
 
Horthy proclaimed an armistice with the Soviet Union and withdrew from the war. The Nazis responded by occupying the royal castle and installing the leaders of the Arrow Cross. The Hungarian army did not respond to this aggression and accepted new leadership.  3
 
Dec. 21
 
A provisional assembly and government were established in Debrecen.  4
 
Dec. 24
 
The Red Army encircled Budapest, but the Germans and Arrow Cross offered strong resistance. The fighting did not end in Hungary until April 1945. (See Hungary)  5
