PLEBISCITE IN THE SAAR BASIN (See Jan. 13). The return of the Saar to the Reich (March 1) marked the beginning of German expansion under the Hitler regime.  1

Hitler startled the world by denouncing the clauses of the Versailles treaty providing for German disarmament. Under French lead, Great Britain and Italy joined in a strong protest against the German action (See March 16).  2
