Parts of southern Italy, with Sicily and Sardinia, were returned to the jurisdiction of the Italian government. After occupation these areas had been administered with the aid of an Allied Control Commission, an Allied Military Government (AMG), and an Advisory Council for Italy composed of representatives of the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the French Committee of National Liberation.  1

The U.S. Fifth Army entered Rome. Marshal Badoglio resigned as Italian premier and was succeeded by Ivanoe Bonomi.  2
