Mussolini resigned and was placed under arrest. Marshal Pietro Badoglio replaced him and declared the Fascist Party dissolved (July 28).  2
 
Sept. 3
 
The Badoglio cabinet accepted terms of surrender for Italy. Upon the announcement of surrender (Sept. 8), German forces seized control of the leading cities, including Rome, Milan, Trieste, Genoa, Bologna, Verona, and Cremona.  3
 
Sept. 15
 
Mussolini, rescued from captivity by German troops, proclaimed a Republican Fascist Party and achieved some authority in the areas of Italy still under German control.  4
 
Oct. 13
