Bernardino Machado was again elected president. The general situation was improving: the budget tended to be balanced, the currency became stable again, public works were on the rise, and agrarian reforms and social welfare were being actively discussed in government circles. But it was too late; Republicans were tending toward radicalism, but their traditional supporters, the middle- and lower-class people of Lisbon, were tired of the constant instability.  4
