1939, March
 
The continued expansion of Germany to the east produced ever greater tension. Daladier asked for and received from Parliament power to govern by decree without express limitations, a situation unprecedented under the Third Republic. The premier used his power to speed up rearmament and to effect partial mobilization. France assumed an attitude of quiet determination, but at the same time joined with Britain in guarantees to Poland and Greece, and used all its influence to draw Russia into the nonaggression system (See 1939, March).  1
