De Valera dissolved the dáil and in the ensuing elections (Jan. 24) secured for his party a clear majority of one.  1

Railway workers in Northern Ireland went on strike.  2

The dáil abolished the oath of loyalty and soon afterward voted that the approval of the governor-general should no longer be necessary to put legislation into effect; appeals to the British privy council were made illegal.  3

The Communist Party of Ireland was founded.  4

The Center Party (Cumman na nGaedheal) fused with the National Guard to form the United Ireland Party (later known as Fine Gael). After some initial infighting under the leadership of O'Duffy, Cosgrave became leader of the party.  5
