Conclusion of the German-Polish nonaggression pact, the first break in the French alliance system.  1

Conclusion of the Balkan pact among Turkey, Greece, Romania, and Yugoslavia. It was the counterpart of the Little Entente and was designed to protect the Balkans from encroachment by other powers. The great weakness of the pact was the absence of Bulgaria.  2

The Soviet Union's nonaggression pacts with Poland and the Baltic states were extended into ten-year agreements.  3
 
Sept. 18
 
The Soviet Union joined the League of Nations, another reflection of fear of the new Germany.  4
