The United States intervened in the Philippines because of the Spanish-American War (See April 2425), destroying the Spanish navy in Manila Bay on May 1. With American backing, Aguinaldo returned to the Philippines and established a government, in cooperation with the ilustrado Apolinario Mabini. A nationalist platform that guaranteed the property rights of the ilustrados was advanced. Aguinaldo's position in the revolutionary movement was weakened by acquiescing to the interests of the ilustrados. | 1 |
