A Russo-Japanese agreement demarcated spheres in Manchuria; this was in joint opposition to U.S. proposals (namely, P. C. Knox's scheme of Nov. 1909) for common action in defense of Russian and Japanese interests.  1
 
Aug. 22
 
KOREA WAS ANNEXED by a treaty forced on its government by the Japanese (See Aug. 22). A program of development and attempted assimilation commenced.  2
