Chsh men who attempted to capture the imperial palace in Kyoto were defeated in pitched battles. The bakufu demanded that 35 of the feudal domains join in a punitive expedition against Chsh.  2
 
Sept
 
An allied expedition of British, Dutch, French, and U.S. ships silenced Chsh forts at Shimonoseki, thereby breaking the back of the antiforeign movement. Edo agreed to pay an indemnity for Chsh (Oct.).  3
