The Serbian section of the Vienna-to-Constantinople railroad was completed.  1

Serbia declared war on Bulgaria after the union of Eastern Rumelia and Bulgaria. The Serbs were completely defeated at Slivnitza (Nov. 17) but were saved from invasion by the intervention of Austria.  2

The Serbian Industrial Company was established in Belgium. It represented the power of foreign enterprises in the exploitation of the Timok coal basin.  3
 
1888, Aug
 
Milan divorced his Russian wife, Nathalia, who left the country. Milan's increasing unpopularity caused unrest, which was compounded by a growing split between the Austrian party and the pro-Russian nationalist factions, which resulted in the convocation of a constituent assembly.  4
