National synod of the Catholic Church approved efforts to regulate the political conduct of clergy. The bishop of Ossory subsequently forbade O'Keefe and O'Shea to continue political activity.  1

A Catholic university opened in Dublin. The creation of a Catholic university reflected growing concern over the quality of Catholic priests and education in Ireland raised by John Henry Newman, who became the first rector of the university.  2
