With lack of rations and pay several months in arrears, Pennsylvania and New Jersey soldiers staged a mutiny in efforts to improve conditions. Washington put down the revolt and executed its leaders.  1

George Rogers Clark, with a force of Virginians, completed the conquest of the Old Northwest, capturing Hamilton, the British commander, at Vincennes.  2
 
June
 
Spain entered the war against Britain, on the promise of France that it would assist Spain in recovering Gibraltar and the Floridas.  3
 
Sept. 23
 
Naval victory of John Paul Jones of the Bonhomme Richard over the Serapis and the Countess of Scarborough.  4
Meanwhile the British had decided to try, with the aid of loyalists, to overrun the Southern states. In 1778 Savannah was captured and in 1780 Sir Henry Clinton laid siege to Charleston.  5
