Sadiq al-Mahdi was reelected at the head of a government of national unity. Severe floods struck the south, killing thousands. In November, the government began talks with the SPLA (Sudanese People's Liberation Army).  1

The Islamic fundamentalist government in Sudan launched an attack against the rebel group Sudanese People’s Liberation Army. This group had been fighting against the government in southern Sudan since 1983. On March 17 the Sudanese government met with the rebels for peace talks, and on March 27 the government announced a cease-fire with rebels.  2
 
1996, March 6–17
 
Sudanese president Omar Hassan al-Bashir won reelection and his supporters won election to the legislature, amid allegations regarding the unfairness of the elections.  3

Opponents of the government claimed that 11 military officers were executed for an alleged coup plot.  4
