Though protected by the Nigerian-led troops known as ECOMOG, the government in the capital of Freetown fell briefly to a Liberian coup in which rebels called for the release of imprisoned leader Foday Sankoh and the deposing of Pres. Kabbah. The ECOMOG restored order, but Sankoh was released to participate in negotiations between rebels and the government.  1

A cease-fire was called when RUF and ARFC control over the government increased after RUF leader Sankoh was given amnesty and the groups agreed to share loyalty to the government of Sierra Leone. Unfortunately, the RUF failed to disarm, and fighting continued into the year 2000. Koromah's AFRC remained loyal to the government in which it shared power, but RUF conflicts persisted in the north.  2
