A new constituent assembly was given the task of drafting a new constitution for Nigeria. Babangida called for the introduction of a two-party system based on civilian participation.  1
The government closed universities after student protests against rising fuel prices turned violent. Demonstrations staged by trade unions prompted the government to arrest a number of labor leaders.  2
