In an act designed to further consolidate his power, Traore abolished the position of prime minister.  1
 
1990
 
Students and workers protested Traore's policies. Government reprisals led to mass protests and collapse of the government. Free elections were held. Alpha Konare was elected president.  2
 
1995, Nov
 
Clashes between students and security forces in Bamako marked the end of the honeymoon phase of the Konare presidency. New elections were scheduled for Jan. 1997, but these were postponed when opposition parties threatened to boycott them.  3
 
1996, Feb
 
Three thousand Tuareg separatist fighters surrendered their weapons under a planned integration of former rebels into the national army. This demilitarization marked the end of a major regional rebellion in the western desert region of West Africa.  4
 
1997, April
 
Elections were held amid considerable confusion and complaints of intimidation. Election results were annulled by the constitutional court.  5
 
July
 
Voting proceeded fairly among 17 parties standing for legislative seats.  6
