Three Belgian nationals were arrested and charged with plotting to overthrow the president. Belgium vehemently denied the accusation and claimed that its nationals were arrested following a commercial dispute.  1

Gen. Lansana Conte was again voted into the presidency; outside monitoring officials questioned the validity of the election.  2
