A coup attempt led by Col. Diarra Traore failed. Sixty government opponents, including 9 former ministers and 30 military officers, were eventually sentenced to death and executed.  1
 
1988, Jan
 
Student riots in Conarky forced the Guinean government to reverse recent price hikes springing from the devaluation of the country's currency.  2
 
1994, Dec
 
The government announced measures to combat organized crime and other serious offenses that were sweeping the capital and outlying regions. Government also introduced legislation to curb the influence of Islamic fundamentalism.  3
 
1995, March
 
Elections for the national assembly were planned for June. Parties for the opposition denounced the date, claiming that they would not have enough time to organize.  4
 
June 11
 
A total of 848 candidates from 21 parties competed for 114 seats. The government's Parti de l’unité et du progrès won 70 of the seats.  5
 
July
 
Three radical opposition parties joined forces with nine other parties to form a new front for the opposition.  6
