Pres. Omar Bongo, who had already ruled the country for thirty-one years, was elected to an additional seven-year term. The election was tainted by charges of voter fraud and irregularities related to Bongo's Gabonese Democratic Party. The U.S.-based International Foundation for Electoral Systems denounced and discredited the election procedures and results.  1
